Position Summary

Instructional responsibilities include teaching HRT 206-Training and Pruning Plants (1credit) for the Institute of Agricultural Technology during the Spring 2020 semester. Course will be delivered in Traverse City, Michigan at Northwestern Michigan College for 10 Weeks. HRT 206 contact hours will be 2 hours per week - February 10 through April 24, 2020.

Course Description:

HRT 206 is an introductory level course that provides the principles and techniques of pruning for landscape and nursery ornamentals, Christmas tree production, tree fruits, and small fruits. Pruning practices, equipment, and basic large tree care techniques.

Desired Learning Outcomes

  • Understand plant anatomy and biology as it pertains to training and pruning techniques

  • Evaluate and apply training and pruning practices to:

  • Trees, shrubs, and perennials in landscape and nursery industries

  • Tree fruit and small fruit production systems

  • Understand and explain the economic importance of training and pruning

  • Recognize and understand climbing techniques and pruning as it relates to large tree care

Position is planned to recur every Spring Semester

Required Degree

Masters -Experience in pruning and training plant

Desired Degree

Other -Experience in pruning and training plant

Minimum Requirements

Required: B.S. in Horticulture or related fields

Experience in pruning and training plants.

Knowledge and skills to develop resources, teach pruning and training concepts.

Excellent teaching, oral and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

Desired: Masters or Ph.D. in Horticulture or related fields

Experience in development and assessment of learning outcomes

Undergraduate teaching experience and a passion for teaching
