Job Description

This position performs as the first-line supervisor in a highly complex and structured organization and has the responsibility of directing professional staff and technical employees in the Metabolic Unit of the Newborn Screening (NBS) Section which screen all newborn children in Michigan for inborn errors of metabolism and genetic disorders. This position requires a thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used in high throughput clinical laboratories. Using considerable expertise and independent judgment, this position has responsibility for the complex testing for Metabolic diseases in newborn babies. This requires refining the testing and reporting algorithms in collaboration with Medical Management. This position serves as a Newborn Metabolic testing technical consultant for the State of Michigan. The Metabolic Unit manager co-supervises the NBS Section operational needs with the Endocrine Unit manager and NBS Section manager. In addition, the employee performs functions such as approving leave, performing service ratings, counseling employees, participating in employee grievance procedures and the hiring and training of personnel.

Required Education and Experience


Possession of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, forensic science, biology, microbiology, or a related pure or applied science.


Five years of experience equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist or Microbiologist, including three years equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist P11 or Microbiologist P11, two years equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 12 or Microbiologist 12, or one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist Specialist 13, Microbiologist Specialist 13, or Laboratory Scientist Manager 13.
