Turfgrass Plant Pathology Research Ast I
The successful candidate will be an integrated part of a research group conducting field, laboratory and greenhouse research in the area of turfgrass pathology; will assist in the design and planning of experiments, conduct experiments, collect and analyze resultant data and assist in preparing reports in order to contribute to overall research goals; will supervise student workers.
Responsibilities include: assisting in planning and designing field trials to meet collaborator goals including set up, treatment application, data collection and analysis of field, greenhouse and laboratory trials; operating, calibrating, and maintaining various scientific instruments for both laboratory and field settings; conducting research using skills such as those associated with culture manipulations and maintenance and pathogen isolations; pesticide handling, weighing and application, field plot maintenance; maintaining chemical inventory and materials including record keeping; cleaning and autoclaving of lab materials, preparing solutions and media; handling, using, storing and disposing of hazardous materials including, but not limited to, pesticides and hazardous waste; performing data analysis using statistical software; writing reports; identifying turfgrass diseases and pathogens in situ and in vitro; ordering equipment and supplies. Applicant is also expected to make presentations at field days. This is an off dated position funded for one year from the date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in biology, microbiology, pathology, or other related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to pathology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid vehicle operator's license, and must possess a category 3A pesticide applicator certification or be able to obtain one within one month of hire.
Knowledge in the use of SAS and ARM software packages; familiarity with the use of electronic handheld data collectors; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with operation of basic turfgrass maintenance equipment; highly organized, self-motivated, and excellent time management skills.

Description of End Date

Lifting and carrying 50 lb. bags of fertilizer. Pushing fertilizer spreader over turf plots monthly or bi-weekly.
