Agricultural Research Service Agricultural Science Research Technician in East Lansing, Michigan
This position is located within United States Department of Agriculture/ Agricultural Research Service/ Field Organization/ Midwest Area (Peoria, IL)/ Sugarbeet and Bean Research Unit in East Lansing, MI. The incumbent assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, and performs techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment. This position is a GS-5/6/7/8/9 career ladder but is only being announced at the GS-5 and GS-7 levels.
Prepares, maintains, and harvests dry bean field experiments, including seed preparation, planting, applies chemical and fertilizer applications, conducts weed control.
Conducts post-harvest data collection, including seed yield and canning quality.
Maintains inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment for use in the laboratory, field or greenhouse facility, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).
Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies dry bean, plant, seed, or genetic samples and supporting records with related experiments.
Maintains records and compiles data and other information from various sources in support of field, greenhouse, or laboratory experiments related to dry beans, plants, seeds, or genetics.
Keeps detailed records of experimental data.
Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.
Maintains, calibrates and modifies field and laboratory equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience keeping records of experimental research data; performing crop planting and harvesting; and operating laboratory or field equipment in support of plant research. OR Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, or genetics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related degrees or courses may include agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, or genetics. OR A combination education and specialized experience as described above. GS-7:
Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience keeping records of experimental research data; performing crop planting and harvesting; operating laboratory or field equipment in support of plant research; and preparing and analyzing data for research purposes. OR Education: Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, or genetics. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
