Henry Ford Health System Mgr- Chemistry - Full Time - Detroit/Days in Detroit, Michigan


Under general direction, organizes, and supervises the overall activities of the specific division. Coordinates and assists in the development and implementation of institutional, departmental, and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and processes. Primarily responsible for the development & maintenance of the division budget, in planning for the future needs of the division and department.


  • The duties and responsibilities of the supervisor encompass four major area: Technical, Human Resources, Budget, and Quality Management. Technical:
  1. Assures divisional compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements, including educational, competency, and safety guidelines.

  2. Oversees and assists in maintaining the quality control program.

  3. Oversees and assists in maintaining up to date technical procedures.

  4. Prepares and/or reviews various managerial reports.

  5. Oversees and assists in maintaining LIS database for the division.

  6. Oversees and assists in the orientation and training of new employees and students.

  7. Meets with current and prospective new vendors to maintain and/or develop working relationships, and to keep abreast of new techniques and technologies.

  8. Oversees and assists with the selection and implementation of new or alternate tests.

  9. Prepares and monitor daily, weekend, holiday, and vacation schedules for all sections within the division.

Human Resources:

  • Interviews and, in consultation with the division head, hires new employees to maintain adequate staffing.

  • Prepares and delivers, in a timely manner, annual employee evaluations.

  • When appropriate, enforces disciplinary action in accordance with departmental & institutional policies.

  • Assumes responsibility for the submission of divisional payroll.


  • Prepares and monitors, with input form the division head, the operating and capital budgets for the division.

  • Prepares and/or reviews various trends and reports which impact the divisional budget.

Quality Management:

  • Interacts with other health care professionals with respect to laboratory operations and customer expectations.

  • When requested, acts as a divisional and/or departmental representative on various committees.

  • Promotes and encourages participation in the Quality Management Process.

  • Implements and monitors various divisional and/or departmental QA processes.

  • Reviews various QA reports to assure optimal patient care.


  • Completion of accredited Bachelor’s Degree program in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science.

  • Requires five years experience, with progressive responsibility, in a laboratory setting.

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to oversee laboratory functions.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with others.

  • Accreditation or certification from a recognized national agency, such as ASCP, ASM, ACS, HEW, NCA is highly desirable.


  • Near Acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.

  • Depth perception: ability to judge distance and space relationships. Accommodation: ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.

  • Color Vision: ability to distinguish and identify different colors
