Henry Ford Health System Director-Direct-to-Employer Relationships GM Focused- Population Health in Detroit, Michigan

This position would also have guidance from the Medical Director of Population Health and would be primarily supporting the General Motors direct-to-employer contracted relationships.


Under the direction of the Senior Vice-President, Population Health, and with clinical guidance by the CEO, Henry Ford Physician Network, the Director of Direct-toEmployer Relationships is responsible for ensuring the successful performance of all aspects of direct-to-employer contracted relationships, including value measures such as high clinical outcomes, high customer experience, and lowest appropriate cost. Serving as the primary liaison between the Henry Ford Health System and the contracted employer organization, the Director implements ongoing methods to ensure successful response to new opportunities, including negotiation of contract parameters in partnership with the HFHS Reimbursement and Contracting team, rapid implementation of operational changes to meet new contract requirements, and ongoing management of performance and improvement to meet contract criteria and achieve financial shared savings. Continuously improves HFHS’s long-term strategy and approach for securing new value-based contracts, including direct-to-employercontracts.


  • Manage responses to opportunities (RFPs and other requests) for new/potential direct-to-employer contracted relationships, serving as the primary contact point for HFHS.

  • Ensure immediate legal review and signatures for non-disclosure agreements or memoranda of understanding.

  • Establish and lead committees/sub-committees to respond to RFPs/RFIs about new direct-to-employer contracts.

  • Develop opportunity assessment for move-forward approval from HFHS executives (to proceed with RFP response), including clear picture of return-oninvestment, implications for growth, and alignment with System goals and strategies.

  • Coordinate overall responses, bid sheets, and other required materials according to the RFP timelines and methods.

  • Lead preparation and delivery of proposal presentations to potential clients, including preparation of slides, materials, and talking points for presenters to ensure HFHS’s brand and expertise are clearly articulated.

  • Conduct benchmarking with other ACOs/health systems in direct-to-employer contracts as necessary.

  • Manage additional, pre-contract award meetings with client and/or consultants as requested by potential client, coordinating the work of others HFHS staff and departments as necessary to finalize details, make key decisions, and negotiate contract parameters.

  • Ensure ongoing communication of progress to Population Health leadership, other health system leadership, ACO/CIN physician leadership, and the CEO’s executive team.

  • Manage all preparations of awarded contract to ensure readiness for new contract launch

  • Lead continuing or revised team to finalize contract parameters and negotiations with client and/or client’s consultant.

  • Coordinate negotiations with payer/TPA for data requirements, claims and data timelines, etc.

  • Coordinate development/revisions of all documents required by client before project launch, such as operating manuals, policies and procedures, data requirements, etc.

  • Develop overall implementation work plan, including expected investments and staffing needs, and share with executive leaders for final approval. Organize a steering committee and sub-teams to address work plan elements (contract requirements) and ensure timely completion.

  • Identify all stakeholders and manage organization-wide education about new contract timing, requirements, and changes.

  • Monitor readiness and continually update needs, barriers, and progress for executive leadership.

  • Maintain ongoing communication with client and/or their consultant during the readiness phase.

  • Implement ongoing methods for contract performance monitoring to ensure success or rapid implementation of improvement.

  • Daily/weekly/monthly dashboards of process and outcome measures.

  • Standing HFHS oversight committee to routinely review performance and identify improvement needs.

  • HFHS participation and influence during regular meetings of the HFHS/client Joint Operating Committee.

  • Ad hoc improvement teams to address underperforming areas

  • Routine reporting of financial and operational progress to executive leadership, value-based leaders/teams, operational leaders, and relevant boards of trustees.

  • Serve as ongoing liaison to client’s contract manager and other client leadership; be the “face” of HFHS for the contract.

  • Work in concert with the Board(s) and ensures that the Board(s) is fully informed and educated on areas related to the success of the organization. Challenges, concerns and educational opportunities that address changes in healthcare, reimbursement or other areas, will be made available to Board members so that there is current knowledge of issues that may impact employer groups.

  • Enhance HFHS’s long-term strategy and approach for securing new value-based contracts (including direct-to-employer contracts).

  • Document procedures and lessons learned and recommend new approaches as necessary for future projects.

  • Develop new knowledge and expertise personally, for the team, and for HFHS overall to ensure continuous improvement on future contract success.

  • Lead or participate in professional collaboratives, community partnerships, or local/regional/national learning networks that continue to build HFHS’s competencies in direct-to-employer contracting.

  • Prepare articles and internal/external presentations that elevate HFHS’s brand and provider/staff expertise.


  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in business administration, Industrial/Operations engineering, or related business/finance field.

  • Five plus (5+) years of experience in performance improvement, provider operation and strategic planning.

  • Experience with health care population management to improve preventive care or chronic disease is preferred.

  • Experience in operations, HR, or benefits design (either in healthcare or another industry) a plus.

  • Leadership experience (managing projects and teams of people) strongly preferred.
